Nott'm Forest 3-2 Yeovil

Kris Commons

Nottingham Forest secured promotion back to the Championship on a dramatic final day of the season.

Forest's win, combined with Doncaster's defeat at Cheltenham, saw the Reds take the second automatic promotion spot.

Julian Bennett's powerful strike and a cool Kris Commons finish put Forest in charge but Marcus Stewart teed up Jaime Peters to make it 2-1 at the break.

Lewis McGugan's fine free-kick restored the two-goal lead and Forest held on despite Andy Kirk's header.

However Forest were still pinning their hopes on Cheltenham taking at least a point from promotion rivals Doncaster.

And the Robins did their bit, beating Rovers 2-1 to ensure their League One survival and send the Reds up.

Forest threatened to have the game wrapped up by half-time after making a blistering start.

McGugan had already sent a rapsing 25-yard effort narrowly wide before Bennett put Forest ahead.

The left-back won possession and unleashed a fierce 20-yard shot which flew past Glovers keeper Steve Mildenhall.

And it was soon 2-0 when Commons slipped the ball through Mildenhall's legs after being put in the clear by Brett Ormerod.

But Yeovil hit back and a powerful run by Peters saw him finish from close range after a neat pass from veteran striker Stewart.

McGugan's stunning free-kick saw Forest stretch their lead to 3-1 and Wes Morgan almost added a fourth but his header was cleared off the line.

Yeovil responded once again and Marvin Williams went close before Kirk ensured a nervy last 15 minutes when he headed in following corner.

By this stage Forest fans were aware that Doncaster had levelled against Cheltenham at Whaddon Road.

But the Robins grabbed a late winner and Forest held on to seal their promotion and spark wild scenes of celebration as supporters filled the City Ground pitch on the final whistle.
