How did they get there: Cruised home. Finished ahead of the Netherlands in Group G and qualified with two games to spare. Romania had not started that impressively, but picked up strongly and thumped Albania 6-1 to finish in style.

Romania stats and form guide

Victor Piturca

Manager: Victor Piturca. The former Steaua Bucharest striker, who won the European Cup in 1986, is enjoying a second spell in charge of his country and has unfinished business with this tournament, after he was sacked prior to Euro 2000 despite having led Romania to the finals.

Captain: Christian Chivu. The 27-year-old has spent five years in Italy, first with Roma and now at Inter Milan and is considered one of the finest defenders in the world. Can play at left-back or centre-back and has appeared in midfield at times for Romania, Chivu is also a free-kick specialist with a trusty left boot.

Get involved in the debate over Romania's Euro chances

Euro highlights: Qualified in 1984 and 1996 but had to wait until 2000 and their ninth match to win a European Championship finals match against - yep, you guessed it - England. Phil Neville's last-gasp penalty giveaway sent Romania into the quarter-finals, where they lost 2-0 to Italy.

Euro legend: Gheorghe Hagi - no contest. Played in all three of Romania's finals appearances, the 'Maradona of the Carpathians' captained his country for 15 years and dazzled with his wand of a left foot and magical skills. Unfortunately, he blotted his copybook by getting sent off against Italy at Euro 2000 - his last international. Adrian Mutu

Star man: Adrian Mutu. The former Chelsea striker, who was sacked by the Blues in 2004 after he tested positive for cocaine, has rebuilt his career first with Juventus and now Fiorentina. He is Romania's creative outlet, setting up and scoring goals for fun and will be a major threat this summer.

Strengths: Mutu's partnership with 22-year-old Stuttgart striker Ciprian Marica blossomed during qualifying as they bagged 11 goals between them. Also, in Chivu and Cosmin Contra, they have two experienced defenders who both played at Euro 2000.

Weaknesses: Piturca used 39 players during qualifying and Romania are not a settled side, the coach preferring to rotate and blood youngsters. Also, being in the 'Group of Death' is a weakness, though not one they can do much about.

World ranking: 12th.

Our verdict: Their only chance of getting out of the group is if France and Italy both severely under-perform. They look out of their depth in such illustrious company and will need a Greece-type miracle to progress any further.
