Captain Barry Ferguson remained dissatisfied with Rangers' performance, despite ensuring qualification from Uefa Cup Group A in Auxerre.
"We're obviously delighted, but again we made it hard for ourselves," he said after a 2-2 draw with the French side.
"We defended very sloppily at set-pieces, but we are through, so we are happy.
"It was a difficult group with some difficult teams and we're happy to be in the competition after Christmas."
Indeed, together with Celtic's Champions League win over Manchester United, it is 35 years since both sides of the Old Firm have been in Europe into the new year.
And Rangers manager Paul Le Guen appeared more satisfied with the performance than his captain.
"I am very disappointed with the result""The pitch was difficult and made it difficult to play a perfect game," he told BBC Sport.
"But we played a good game with great spirit.
"Auxerre are a good team with great players, but we responded well and never gave up.
"There's a real spirit about the team.
"I feel we are improving and it is a great feeling as we are getting through this difficult period.
"I'm pleased with the players as they made efforts and were rewarded.
"They are ready to fight on the pitch for Rangers."
Defeat to Maccabi Haifa in their opening game means Auxerre have taken just one point and coach Jean Fernandez was unhappy at being held to a draw.
"I am very disappointed with the result," he said.
"We have two matches to go and we must take six points.
"But, for now, we will focus on our next game against Lyon this weekend."
