Martinez wants 'strong' Cup ref

Swansea and Havant & Waterlooville clash in their first FA Cup tie Swansea boss Roberto Martinez hopes former Premier League referee Andy D'Urso will "stamp his authority" on Wednesday's FA Cup third round replay.

Martinez felt referee Stuart Attwell lost control of the first match with Havant & Waterlooville, which saw both teams reduced to 10 men in a 1-1 draw.

But the Spaniard believes his players will be "better protected" this time.

"There's a thin line between what's legal and illegal, that's why we need a referee with a cool head," he said.

"We didn't have that in the first game, and that's been well documented.

"But now this referee is well experienced and we're happy. I think we'll be able to leave the football do the talking."

The first encounter between the two sides at the Liberty Stadium was a fiery encounter, with Martinez later claiming the visitors' aggression had overstepped the mark.

Proceedings boiled over 10 minutes from time after Brett Poate's dangerous two-footed challenge on Swansea's Andrea Orlandi.

A mass brawl ensued between the players, and both clubs have subsequently been charged for failing to control their players over the incident.

Swansea captain Alan Tate sent off for his part in the clash - following Poate into the dressing rooms, who was given a straight red for his challenge on Orlandi.

Tate's three-match suspension came into force immediately for Swansea's next game, which means he will sit out Wednesday's replay.

But Poate's has not yet started because Blue Square South side Havant & Waterlooville are subject to local association rules which see suspensions implemented 14 days after the offence.

"We need to be ready and fully focused"
Swansea boss Roberto Martinez

Martinez said it is ''amazing and unfortunate'' that Poate is allowed to play.

"The situation speaks louder than any of my words," Martinez told BBC Wales Sport. "You've got two players sent off in the same game and one of them is allowed to play in the replay and the other one is not."

The incentive to reach the fourth round is even greater for both sides following last week's draw.

A tie against Liverpool at Anfield awaits the winners, after the Reds comfortably overcame Luton Town in Tuesday's replay.

Martinez is expecting another physical encounter against the part-timers at Westleigh Park but is backing his players to deal with anything thrown at them

"The first game was a typical cup game, and the replay won't be any different," said Martinez, who has already beaten two non-league sides in this year's competition.

"You've got a group of players who are really enthusiastic about their game.

"It's one of the biggest games in the club's history and you can understand that there are certain emotions attached to it. It's going to be really, really difficult.

"For one game any team can rise to the occasion and make it very, very difficult and that's going to be the case on Wednesday.

"We need to be ready and fully focused."
