Oyston denies 'no investment' cry

Bloomfield Road

Chairman Karl Oyston has denied claims from supporters that Blackpool are in relegation trouble because he has failed to invest in the team.

The Seasiders could lose their Championship status on Sunday if they lose to Watford at Bloomfield Road and teams below them win.

Oyston told BBC Radio Lancashire: "That's been the cry every year since I've been here and I don't accept it.

"It's a throw-away comment from every fan - 'go spend more money'."

Blackpool looked safe a few weeks ago but a run of just one win in 10 matches has seen them dragged back into the relegation picture.

Oyston defended his stance on not over-spending and pointed to Coventry, Southampton and Leicester as examples of how teams can run up debts.

"We want to build and not put ourselves into free-fall as other clubs have"

"There are clubs below us that wish they'd not gone on a spending spree because that's put them where they are now," he said.

"It catches up with you eventually - there are some scary stats out there about clubs in debt. Let's not forget these are clubs that average two or three times our gates and have been in the Premier League recently in some cases.

"We're a completely different example - we want to build and not put ourselves into free-fall as other clubs have."

Oyston admitted he has considered what might happen if the club go down.

"You have to plan for every eventuality. It would be extremely unprofessional of us not to plan like that," he added.
