Jason Perry column

Former Cardiff City captain

It's great news, absolutely fantastic news that Cardiff will represent England in next season's Uefa Cup should they win the FA Cup. Cardiff City celebrate booking their place in the FA Cup final

It's exciting news for Cardiff City Football Club, for Wales and for fans of football.

It's an opportunity for Cardiff if they were - and it's a big if - to beat Portsmouth in the FA Cup final to go back into Europe.

They are special, special nights, European football nights and hopefully Cardiff City will get the right result on 17 May to venture into Europe.

I think it's the right decision and what we mustn't forget is that Cardiff are not representing England, they are representing the English league.

That is the league that Cardiff play in so, to me, if they win the FA Cup they earn the right to go into Europe as FA Cup winners and to represent the English league - that's the big difference.

"I'm surprised at the decision to play the Welsh national anthem at Wembley"

They've got a big, big job ahead of them first.

Obviously Portsmouth are in the Premier League, it's not going to be easy, but it's going to be a fantastic occasion.

It's going to be even more special because the players have an opportunity, the club have an opportunity, to go into Europe.

I'm surprised, I've got to be honest, at the decision to play the Welsh national anthem at Wembley.

I thought they'd just stick to normal proceedings, I didn't think that Cardiff City would have it both ways - where they can demand to get the Welsh national anthem and then go in and say they're representing the English league.

"When it's time to sing the Welsh National Anthem, let's sing our hearts out"

It is a surprise but, okay, the decision has gone for us and hopefully the players will enjoy it, certainly the fans will enjoy it.

If you can't raise yourself for what many people believe is the best national anthem in the world, you can never raise your game.

So it does build up to a very, very exciting FA Cup final.
