Fowler in Cup final fitness race

Robbie Fowler

Cardiff manager Dave Jones has told Robbie Fowler he has 10 days to prove his fitness for the FA Cup final.

Former England striker Fowler has been out for four months since hip surgery but Jones says he could feature against Portsmouth at Wembley on 17 May.

"We can give him 10 days of solid hard training which he needs and I'll make a decision on it," said Jones.

"We've got an opportunity to test the hip and see if it stands up to it. If it does, it would be fantastic.

"Then we know we've got a player who can score goals for us."

Jones said one-time Premier League goal king Fowler has already completed more than a week of training and felt expected soreness.

Captain Darren Purse said he is hoping the Liverpool goal-scoring legend will be available for Cardiff's first FA Cup final for 81 years.

"If he can get in or around the bench, it would be great," said Purse.

"He is a big game player and with 10 minutes to go, if we need a goal, he is the man to do it."

Paul Parry was Cardiff's other injury concern, however the speedy Wales striker played 71 minutes - and scored - in the 3-0 win over Barnsley in Sunday's final Championship game of the season.

A hamstring problem had kept Parry out for six weeks.
