Powell bids farewell to Charlton

Chris Powell

Charlton manager Alan Pardew says veteran defender Chris Powell will leave the club in the summer.

The 39-year-old former England international will not be kept on as a coach at The Valley either.

Pardew told the club website: "I'd love to keep him in a coaching capacity, but I haven't got any funds for that.

"If I was further down the leagues and looking for a coach who could double up as a player, he would be first on my list," he added.

Powell started his career at Crystal Palace in 1987 before going on to play for Derby County, West Ham and Charlton in three spells.

He has played more than 600 games in league football and fittingly scored in his final game for Charlton against Coventry on Sunday after having gone six years without finding the net.

Powell is thought to want to continue in his role as the chairman of the Professional Footballers Association but if he were to do so he would have to continue to be registered as a player.
