Exeter call off Southampton match

The planned pre-season friendly match between Exeter City and Southampton at St James Park on Saturday, 26 July has been called off.

The sides were drawn together in the first round of the Carling Cup earlier this month and did not want to play one another before a competitive match.

The teams would have played each other twice in just over a fortnight.

City are now working to try and find a suitable opponents to replace the Championship side.

"It makes sense to call it off," Exeter boss and former Southampton player Paul Tisdale said.

"I don't think either of us wanted to be playing a friendly such a short time before an important cup clash - and there would not have been quite the same appeal for our fans either."
