I never wanted Bridge - Redknapp

Harry Redknapp

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed that he was never in the running to sign Chelsea and England defender Wayne Bridge.

Pompey had been linked with the left-back but he signed a new four-year deal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Redknapp told BBC Radio Solent: "I never expected to get Wayne Bridge. I think he's a terrific player in all honesty, but that was never a goer.

"I read the papers but there was nothing in that at all," he added.

"We never made any contact with Chelsea or Wayne Bridge or anybody else, that was just a name that someone dug up from somewhere."

Redknapp also hinted that he is still in the market for one or two more players to bring to Fratton Park.

"We've got a good team and a good squad, but we're always looking to improve"

"Hermann [Hreidarsson] is fantastic for us, I've got no problems there. It's just that you're looking to strengthen your squad.

"We are still short on the left-hand side. We've got no-one apart from Nico [Kranjcar] that can play wide left if we get a problem and want to change things around.

"And centre-half is an area we've looked at in case Sol [Campbell] is not going to play every game. But we've got Noe Pamarot if he stays fit so that was just looking around.

"There's no-one in particular that we are after and we're not close to doing any business with anybody else at the moment.

"We've spent good money and obviously bought Crouchie who was a lot for us.

"We've got a good team and a good squad, but we're always looking to improve".

Meanwhile Nigeria defender Celestine Babayaro has been forced to put his Portsmouth trial on hold after catching malaria during a trip to Africa.
