Richardson seals Sunderland draw

Kieran Richardson

Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson shook off a dead leg to hand his side a 1-1 draw with Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal in Albufeira on Wednesday.

Richardson scored in the first-half stoppage time after Setubal's Bruno Moraes gave them a second-minute lead.

Defender Phil Bardsley went closest to winning it for the Wearsiders but his fierce shot was palmed clear to safety.

Sunderland suffered a setback when Dwight Yorke got concussion after colliding with keeper Bruno Lima.

Manager Roy Keane handed several fringe players a start, including goalkeeper Darren Ward and midfielder Graham Kavanagh.

Your thoughts on Sunderland's performance

The move seemed to have backfired when Setubal started brighter, scoring within two minutes and then continuing to press the Black Cats.

An improved second-half performance came with the introduction of Andy Reid, Dean Whitehead, Phil Bardsley and Anthony Stokes, whose shot cannoned off the bar late on.

The draw means Sunderland remain unbeaten in pre-season following Sunday's 3-1 win against Sporting Lisbon.
