Butler is latest Swan to sign up

Tom Butler

Winger Tom Butler has become the fourth Swansea City player to sign a new long-term deal with the club.

Butler, 27, scored six goals in a remarkable season for the twice-capped Republic of Ireland international which saw the Swans win the League One title.

"Tom has had his best campaign for the club last season," said manager Roberto Martinez."

"To have someone who can play on the left or right with the same effectiveness is a huge bonus."

Butler's new deal is performance-related in accordance with Martinez's preferred contract policy.

He arrived at the Liberty Stadium in August 2006 signing from Hartlepool for £50,000.

And Martinez says the winger is "desperate" to return to the Premier League where he tasted life with Sunderland.

Former Black Cats trainee Butler played 36 games for the club - including 19 in the Premier League - before signing for Scottish Premier League side Dunfermline.

He also had a loan spell at Darlington, joined Hartlepool on a free transfer in March 2005.

"Tom is desperate to return to the level (Premiers League) he reached with Sunderland and I'm delighted he'll be trying to do that with Swansea City," said Martinez.

"He's a better and more mature player than when he first arrived at the club. He's extremely talented and full of skill - we've all seen it this season.

"I've no doubt that Tom is a player of Premier League standard and I'm delighted he's committed himself to the club."

Butler joins Alan Tate, Owain Tudur Jones, Shaun MacDonald who all committed themselves to the newly-promoted Championship club this week.

Captain Garry Monk, Kevin Austin, Dennis Lawrence and Kristian O'Leary have all been offered new one-year contracts after making enough appearances last season to trigger new deals.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Steve Watt will not be offered a new contract after spending the season on loan at Scottish side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
