Arsenal continue winning streak

By Tony Leighton

Karen Carney

Top of the table Arsenal kept themselves in line for a Women's Premier League and FA Cup double.

Arsenal recorded their 14th successive league win of the season winning 6-0 at relegation-haunted Cardiff City.

Leeds United won 2-1 at Chelsea to climb up to fourth place following up their recent FA Cup win over Everton.

Everton, were denied the chance to bounce back from that FA Cup defeat when their scheduled game at Watford was postponed due to an unfit pitch.

Cardiff City 0-6 Arsenal

Right winger Karen Carney set Arsenal on the way to their 14th successive league win of the season with two goals in the opening 18 minutes.

Striker Kelly Smith added the third goal in the 24th minute, then Lianne Sanderson scored twice in five minutes to give the Gunners a five-goal advantage at the interval.

Midfielder Jayne Ludlow's 51st minute goal was the last of the afternoon as the league champions maintained their 100 per cent record with ease.

The victory lifted them 10 points clear of second in the table Bristol Academy, on whom they have three games in hand.

At the other end of the table Cardiff, with just six points from 16 matches, look relegation certainties as they sit 11 points adrift of the safety places with only six games remaining.

Chelsea 1-2 Leeds United

Leeds had to come from behind to beat inconsistent Chelsea, who took the lead through a 29th minute goal by striker Ellen White.

Left winger Sue Smith equalised five minutes later and midfielder Jess Clarke hit what proved the winner a minute into the second half.

A third win in four matches lifted Leeds four places in the table and, with games in hand on both Bristol and third-placed Blackburn, they could be set for a top three finish.

Chelsea were expected by many to become a top three club this season, but they will now probably have to settle for a mid-table place.
