Portsea dominate Your Game kick-off

Your Game 2008 kicked off in Solent with a clean sweep for Portsea Youth Club.

In the women's competition Portsea Women looked dead and buried after Laura Baker and Charlie Lanahan had put Nacro Girls 2-1 in front with seconds to go.

But Lauren "Lolo" Cheshire's spectacular run and shot in the dying seconds took the final to a penalty shootout, and Portsea emerged triumphant to book their place in the national final.

Portsea Men looked to have things much easier as they cruised to a 4-0 half-time lead, thanks to Sean "Nobody" Newman's stunning first-half hat-trick and Russell Stanley's long-range strike.

Opponents Townsend showed real character in the second half, with goalkeeper Nathan Clarke pulling off a string of fantastic saves as his team fought back to 4-3.

But Portsea made sure of the victory when Newman slammed in his fourth - and Portsea's fifth - from close range.

The results mean Portsea Youth Club - an organisation funded by Portsmouth City Council, aimed at engaging young people in sporting activities - will be well represented at the Your Game national final, at Birmingham City on 19 May.

They will be joined by Up Front and Mittens, who won the male and female Fair Play awards respectively.

Portsea Men's Russell Stanley evades a Townsend challenge The action was just as frantic off the pitch, with entertainment from MC star Skibadee and freestyle football from Ball Fusion.

Skibadee was joined on stage by aspiring young musicians taking part in the BBC Blast MC workshop alongside Invisible of BBC 1Xtra.

"I was surprised by the quality to be honest," said Skibadee. "They were very confident - I had trouble getting the mic back!"

As well as the MC masterclass other workshops included DJing with BBC 1Xtra's Ace and L-Double, reporting and photography, and BBC Match of the Day commentator Nigel Adderley was on hand to uncover potential new stars.
