Spain's Ignacio Garrido will take a three-shot lead into the final day of the Spanish Open despite a three-putt bogey on the final hole.

The 36-year-old, who fired a course record 63 on Friday, had to settle for a third-round 72 to lie on 15 under, three ahead of Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Englishman Mark Foster had a 68 and is tied for third on 11 under.

Darren Clarke carded a 67 to stay in the hunt on eight under while Colin Montgomerie is one over after a 74.

The best round of the day, however, came from 20-year-old Yorkshire amateur Danny Willett who carded a 64 to lift him to nine under.

Willett was nine under for the day after 14 holes and at one point the Walker Cup player was in third place.

But he bogeyed the 15th after hitting a tree and by also missing a seven-foot birdie chance at the 16th, he fell one short of Garrido's course record and two short of the amateur European Tour record set by Sven Struver in the 1989 German Open.

"It was a bit disappointing, but there are some tough holes coming in," said Willett, who won the English amateur title last year.

Garrido, who was just 19 days old when his father Antonio won this tournament in 1972, was denied the title by Seve Ballesteros in 1995.

He only had one birdie on the outward nine and then carded a bogey six at the 13th before claiming a shot back at the 16th for the third day running.

But on the last, Garrido left a 25-foot birdie putt four feet short which he subsequently missed.

"It's just one more hole in the round - nothing to worry about," he said. "The rest of the round was good. I felt comfortable and am happy with my performance.

"I did hit a couple of not committed shots, but it just happens that you lose your concentration a bit."

Jimenez, who finished eighth in the Masters at Augusta last month, birdied four of his opening nine holes before claiming another shot at the 13th.

Clarke, winner of the Asian Open last week, had an eagle and three birdies in his round while Montgomerie still looked rusty after his five-week lay-off.

Montgomerie, who got married for a second time two weeks ago, birdied the 9th but then dropped shots at 12, 14 and 16.
