Antrim and Down reject Rules bid

Antrim delegate John McSparran Antrim and Down have voted to turn down proposals aimed at resurrecting the International Rules series.

Both counties discussed the issue at County Board level this week and voted unanimously to reject the moves.

The GAA's Central Council will meet on St Patrick's Day to make a decision on the future of the series.

The GAA and AFL agreed a new set of guidelines with a view to international games re-starting after they were suspended in 2006.

The other seven Ulster counties have yet to discuss the issue, but all have monthly county board meetings scheduled for next week which are all expected to have International Rules on the agenda.

The GAA circulated a discussion document outlining the agreement with the AFL that included the establishment of a disciplinary tribunal, the appointment of an independent match official and the proviso that any sanctions imposed for misconduct would also apply to the AFL Premiership.

"I have been overwhelmingly mandated to vote against International Rules being restored at Central Council," Antrim delegate John McSparran confirmed to the Irish News.
