Price looking for podium finish

David Price

Liverpool's David Price is targeting a medal in Beijing after sealing his place at this summer's Olympic Games.

Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside, he said: "I'm not going just to be a passenger, I really want to go over and make a statement.

"Once you're there at Super Heavyweight you're two fights away from a medal."

The reigning Commonwealth Games champion finally qualified in Greece after missing out at tournaments in the US and Italy.

"It would make sense to try to steer clear of injuries "

Price was on the brink of qualification at the Chicago World Championships before breaking his left hand.

He then battled back to fitness to fight at the penultimate qualifier in Italy and again missed out, losing in the semi-final.

He admitted he was left worrying if he would ever make it to China.

Price said: "You do have those doubts that maybe it's not meant to be and that's how I was feeling at some points.

"I just said to myself: 'All I can do is give 100% and what will be, will be'."

Price has fought six times this year and is hoping for a break ahead of the Olympics, but he maintains he will be guided in his decisions by Team GB.

He added: "It's just a matter of what they want me to do, but it would make sense to try to steer clear of injuries and not go too mad in terms of competitions so I'm in the right shape when the Olympics do come around."
