Russian win strengthens Olympic claim

Russian players celebrate their world championship victory Russia's victory in the women's handball world championship could set them on the path to Olympic glory in Beijing.

The Russians, who beat Norway 29-24 in Paris, have now won three of the last four world titles.

And while Denmark have traditionally dominated in the Olympic arena, the Danes have performed so badly since Athens that they are now unable to qualify for the 2008 Games.

The likes of Norway, Romania and France should also prove strong contenders in Beijing - so far the hosts China, world champions Russia, runners-up Norway, Brazil and Kazakhstan have qualified.

In the men's game, Croatia and Sweden both have strong historical records - Croatia took gold at Atlanta and Athens, while Sweden have won silver on three occasions.

But success for the Swedes has been thin on the ground recently as they rebuild with a young team.

Beijing could be a chance for a resurgent Polish side to claim gold, having finished as runners-up behind Germany in the 2007 World Championships.

The Germans, alongside China, Kuwait and Brazil, have already qualified. The rest must face qualifying tournaments at the end of May 2008.

British handball is currently little more than a footnote in the sport, with GB still firmly listed as a 'developing' organisation.

Top British players are now training and playing in Denmark with a view to developing their skills in time for London 2012.
