Women's quad aim for Beijing gold

Debbie Flood

Great Britain's women's quadruple scull have a great chance of winning Olympic gold, says crew member Debbie Flood.

Flood won a silver four years ago in Athens in the same event but thinks they will go one better in Beijing.

She told BBC Radio Berkshire: "We have really high expectations of ourselves and high hopes.

"We've done well this season and been in the medals in all our racing and once we're on that start line we're aiming for the gold."

She added: "It's going to be really tough - China are one of our main rivals who beat us when we last raced.

"Germany's record precedes them, having won every single Olympic title in our event since it was introduced - they're not going to roll over either.

"There's the USA as well who beat us in our last race, so there's all to play for.

"We go off to China ten days before we start racing. The Olympics will be here before we know it."

Flood has been named alongside Katherine Grainger, Frances Houghton and Annie Vernon in the women's quadruple scull and she says now the team has been announced, the serious work begins.

"It feels like the Olympics are really close. After this weekend we're going off on training camp, which will feel like a long time as it's a very hard training camp - lots of volume and lots of mileage.

"When we come back we'll be training at Caversham for our pre-Olympic camp for 10 days and back to what we really like doing - preparing for races and sharpening ourselves up.

"Then we go off to China 10 days before we start racing. The Olympics will be here before we know it."

Henley Royal Regatta starts on 2 July and Flood, who is based in the town, says she always looks forward to the week. Debbie Flood

"I moved down from Yorkshire to be in this area to row and my club is Leander, so it's handy to live in Henley.

"It's a real rowing community here - lots of the rowers live in and around here.

"I love Regatta week - it brings such an atmosphere. Rather than take me 10 minutes for me to walk from my house down to the river, it takes about an hour - the whole rowing world descends on Henley.

"It's such a unique regatta - the atmosphere and the different people who come from all over the world for different reasons."
