Don & Avil take World Cup medals

Tim Don

Tim Don continued his impressive early season form by winning the Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup in South Korea.

And fellow Brit Hollie Avil took silver in the women's event, nine seconds behind Kiwi Samantha Warriner.

Former world champion Don, 30, ran away from the field over the final stages of the race to cross in a time of one hour, 38 minutes, 14 seconds.

He clocked a closing 30.25 minutes for the 10km run to claim his first World Cup win since 2005.

New Zealand's Olympic silver medallist Bevan Docherty finished second.

Don kept near the front in the swim but was unable to break up the pack in the bike leg in tricky, windy conditions.

"I always give 100% and it was so pleasing to get on the top of the podium"

But it was on the run when he moved to the front from where he controlled the race.

"I saw in the women's race the run was very technical at both ends and every time they went into a technical bit, they separated in a long line so I decided to get to the front and run at my own pace," said Don.

"I always give 100% and it was so pleasing to get on the top of the podium."

Docherty and Germany's Jan Frodeno ran side-by-side behind the Brit for the entire 10km leg, but even with their stronger kicks, were unable to overhaul the two-time Olympian.

In the women's event, Warriner claimed her sixth World Cup title but said she was "pushed all the way" by Avil, who took her second podium place in as many races.

Avil traded the lead with Warriner until the final lap on the bike but with two kilometres to go the veteran Kiwi surged on a slight uphill.

"I was just trying to hang on in there and when she put another surge in I just couldn't go," said Avil, who moves into a tie for second place in the World Cup rankings.

"I just had to keep strong. I didn't want to let first place go, but I just hung in there and gave all I had until the end."
