Hoy extends GB gold haul to nine

Chris Hoy won the men's keirin race at the Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester to extend the GB medal count to nine golds.

The 32-year-old defended his title to add to his sprint victory on Friday.

Earlier, Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish won the men's madison race, making a hat-trick of titles for Wiggins.

And Victoria Pendleton claimed a double, as she once again dominated the women's individual sprint.

Great Britain have now surpassed their performance at the 2007 championships in Palma, where they won seven golds.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Hoy said: "It's a dream come true. I think there's more to come, I think Vicky [Pendleton] can win in the keirin.

"To have so many successes in Olympics events - that'll be great for the team.

"I don't believe we've actually peaked yet; there's more to come."

Hoy's GB team-mates, Matt Crampton and Ross Edgar, finished in sixth and eighth place, respectively.

In the madison, the British pair were closely marked throughout the 200-lap race, but despite Cavendish needing a late fitness test, played their tactics perfectly.

The pair finished on 19 points, ahead of Germany on 13 and Denmark on 11.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Wiggins said: "I'm lost for words. We knew we had a great chance, but it's such a lottery you never know what's going to happen.

"With 40 laps to go it looked like we had missed out, but we took our chance.

"And we proved our critics wrong."

Cavendish, who had sustained a groin injury in Friday's points race, added: "It was hit and miss whether I was going to ride, but I had more gas than I thought I did.

"We're the best one-day madison riders in the world now!"

Earlier, reigning champion Victoria Pendleton won the women's sprint final, taking both legs of her event.

Adding to her team sprint title, Pendleton comfortably eased past the challenge of Lithuania's Simona Krupeckaite.

Jennie Reed of the USA won a ride-off against China's Guo Shuang for bronze.

Pendleton, who will race in the keirin on Sunday, told BBC Sport: "It felt fantastic; better than last year.

"Last year I thought I'd made a giant leap, but this year I managed to find a bit more.

"It wasn't easy but I felt quite in control and really confident."
