Wetherill wins Paralympics place

David Wetherill Cornwall's David Wetherill has been selected as part of the GB table tennis team for the Beijing 2008 Paralympics.

The 18-year-old from Torpoint is ranked 11th in the world in the class six classification and is the youngest member of the 10-man team.

"There is only really one goal for me at the Games and that is to win the tournament," said Wetherill.

"He is a great chance of a British medal in Beijing and London," table tennis team manager Steve Ward said.

Wetherill won team gold in his class at the Slovenian Open last year and topped it off with a team gold in the Polish Open.

Great Britain won a team silver and individual bronze in Athens four years ago.

But with table tennis being one of China's biggest sports Steve Ward says his team will have to be at the top of their game if they are to make the podium.

"All players will need to perform at the highest level to challenge the Chinese in their backyard," said Ward.

"The sport over there is like football here and we are being told the tickets are selling out already."

The Beijing Paralympics run from 6-17 September with the table tennis beginning on 7 September.
