Aggar impresses at British trials

British Paralympic hopeful Tom Aggar put in a strong performance at the GB adaptive rowing trials at Caversham to boost his Beijing selection claims.

The display follows another good outing at a recent camp in Banyoles, Spain against his Spanish and French rivals.

Aggar won world gold in Munich in 2007 but has struggled with a rib injury over the winter.

A final decision on the make-up of the mixed coxed four for the Games will be made after further internal trials.

A squad of five rowers - 2007 World silver medallists Alastair McKean, Naomi Riches and Vicki Hansford plus newcomers Matthew Pears and James Morgan - will continue, while experienced cox Alan Sherman has successfully retained his seat from last year.

There will also be further trials for the double sculls, while female single sculler Helene Raynsford missed the event because of a recent illness but she was also in good form at the camp in Spain.

"Tom has not had an ideal preparation leading up to the trials through injury but he is now back to a good fitness level," said GB coach Chad King.

"We have made a lot of adjustments to Tom's technique since Munich and his performances at the weekend showed he is coping well with those changes.

"We have more depth of talent aiming for selection this year than in previous years, particularly in the crew boats, which is healthy for the programme leading into the Paralympics."

Adaptive rowing will be making its Paralympic debut in Beijing.
