Storey claims record-breaking win

Sarah Storey

Sarah Storey took overall honours in a special event as Paralympic stars broke three world records at the World Track Cycling Championships in Manchester.

The former swimmer broke her own world 2km time trial record by more than two seconds, setting a new time of two minutes 30.944 seconds.

Her performance toppled Jody Cundy, who broke his 1km time trial mark, at the top of the overall standings.

Aileen McGlynn and Ellen Hunter also set a new tandem time trial record.

The competition saw each rider compete in their own specialist events against a set time, with points awarded according to how close they come to the world best.

Storey, who is targeting three titles at the Beijing Paralympics this summer, delivered a smooth display of cycling in front of her home fans in Manchester.

It was enough for the 30-year-old, who competed under the name of Sarah Bailey until her marriage to sprinter pilot Barney Storey, to take the overall event with a total of 101.350 points.

Storey pipped her former British swimming team-mate Cundy, who finished with 100.664 points ahead of tandem pairing Anthony Kappes and Jon Norfolk.

Paralympic champions McGlynn and Hunter delivered a powerful final lap to set a new world mark of 1:10.381 in the 1km tandem time trial.

But their record-breaking performance was not enough to get into the top three.
