Basketball duo earn GB call-ups

Simon Munn

Great Britain men's wheelchair basketball coach Murray Treseder has called up two newcomers for next week's Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.

Ian Sagar and Simon Brown come into a squad that also features nine players that won silver at last year's European Championships in Germany.

In Manchester they will play European champions Sweden as well as Germany and the USA.

Garry Peel's GB women's team will take on the Netherlands, China and Brazil.

Peel has chosen nine of the squad that helped secure Paralympic qualification by finishing third at the European Championships.

Wendy Smith and Anna Jackson return to the squad while newcomer Pauline McDonald comes in.

The men will continue their preparations as they bid for a medal in Beijing, after winning bronze four years ago in Athens.

Former junior Brown, who plays with the Milton Keynes Aces, has gained a call-up alongside Sheffield player Sagar.

Their main offensive threats will come from the experienced Simon Munn, who was named in the All-Star team at the European Championships, and Terry Bywater.

The basketball events run from 7-10 May at the Manchester Regional Arena with highlights on BBC Two on Sunday 11 May from 1600-1745 BST.

Men: Terry Bywater, Simon Munn, Joe Bestwick, Dan Highcock, Jon Hall, Jon Pollock, Ian Sagar, Simon Brown, Peter Finbow, Ade Orogbemi, Abdi Jama, Kevin Hayes.

Women: Caroline Matthews, Helen Turner, Anna Jackson, Sally Wager, Helen Freeman, Pauline McDonald, Wendy Smith, Caroline McLean, Ann Wild, Clare Strange, Jill Fox, Louise Sugden.
