New Approach straight to Guineas

New Approach

Irish colt New Approach, a clear favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, will have his first outing of the year in the Newmarket classic.

Trainer Jim Bolger said: "New Approach is very well and has done exceptionally over the Winter. He's a much stronger horse than last year."

The top rated juvenile won two Group One races in 2007 - the National Stakes and the Dewhurst.

Ravens Pass and Fast Company are his main rivals in the ante-post market.

Bolger feels that his colt has enough racing experience already and does not need a run before the first flat racing classic of the year on 3 May.

But Newmarket-based trainer John Gosden thinks his horse Ravens Pass will need an outing.

He said: "He could go for one of the trials, the Craven or the Greenham."

The unbeaten Winker Watson, quoted at 14-1, is seen as Newmarket trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam's best hope.

He says he will decide in a couple of weeks' time whether the horse will need a trial before the Guineas.

There are 92 declared entries for the colts' classic, including 20 from Ireland and 12 from the United Arab Emirates.

The ante-post betting market for the 1,000 Guineas is more open, with Gosden again training one of the favourites.

Sense of Joy had just two unbeaten races last summer and is being aimed at the Newmarket classic.

The current favourite Listen, from the Aidan O'Brien stable, is one of 19 entries from Ireland.
