Sheffield Eagles in stadium blow

Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium

Sheffield Eagles could be forced to quit Don Valley Stadium as they prepare to share with Rotherham United FC.

The National One club have been told they can only train on the pitch for 45 minutes each week from next month.

Eagles coach Mark Aston told BBC Radio Sheffield it could jeopardise their season and their future.

"You are what you train and if we start playing badly will Sheffield Council put their hands up and say we cost Sheffield the top four?," he said

The Eagles have been based at Don Valley since it was built in 1990.

"We are a Sheffield team but it could be that we will have to look outside the city"

But Aston says the new restriction on training time at the stadium could force them to find a new home.

"We are a Sheffield team but it could be that we will have to look outside the city from next season for an alternative venue."

Aston also believes their current season will be affected.

"If we can win our last five home games at Don Valley Stadium then we'll hit the target of hitting the top four and if people jeopardise that, it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

"It will almost be that every game at Don Valley will be like an away game."

League Two side Rotherham United are moving to Don Valley for the 2008/09 season after quitting their Millmoor home after failing to agree terms with landlords, the Booth family.

Don Valley Stadium is operated by Sheffield International Venues, a company which works in partnership with Sheffield City Council.
