All 72 professional players with Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors have been allocated clubs in Premiership Division One for next season.
The drafted players will represent these clubs when they are not involved with their professional sides.
Edinburgh coach Andy Robinson believes the system will help his own squad.
"It gives players on the fringes a chance to show their merits so they can earn a place in my starting line-up," said Robinson.
Professional players contracted to Scottish Rugby have already been involved with club sides to a lesser extent, mostly in coaching at various levels.
And Robinson says he has already reaped the benefits of farming players out.
MY SPORT: DEBATE"Players such as Geoff Cross and Greig Laidlaw experienced lots of game-time in Premier One last season," said the Edinburgh coach.
"That enabled them to hit the ground running when called up for first-team duties, rather than being ring rusty from a lack of match practice."
